After installing Homebrew the "brew doctor" command returns:
Warning: No developer tools installed.
You should install the Command Line Tools.
Run `xcode-select --install` to install them.
…and I do have Xcode installed.
Anyway, after running xcode-select --install the Xcode installer appears, then I click "install" and the installer closes.
Is this normal? …and do I have to install Git from Homebrew, or can I use the one that comes with Xcode?
Yes, the Command Line Tools package does include /usr/bin/git. You can see what files are included in an installer by pressing command-I:
As of 10.8, OS X does not come with git preinstalled.
You have to install them because, starting with version 4.3, Xcode is released as a sandboxed, single app bundle.
Before that, Xcode was distributed as an installer called Install Xcode.app. The installer had access to the whole filesystem and created a /Developer directory, where frameworks and additional tools where placed, and installed the command line tools in /usr/bin.
This is no longer the case. Apple chose to make XCode a standard Mac App Store app that installs in /Applications and requires user intervention to install any additional components outside the bundle container.

Yes, it is perfectly normal for homebrew to prompt you to install Xcode. That happened to me right after I installed Mavericks.
As for your question about git, it depends a lot on your usage. Default git (and almost every other tools) are not of the latest version. If you're OK with that, then of course you can just use the default one.
