macOS's default terminal shows the current directory as an icon in the titlebar (called a proxy icon). I can use it to navigate up, or drag the icon to another window to insert the path.
Is there a way to get this icon with iTerm2?
I tried to use various escape sequences, but the best I could to is to get the title set to the current path, but no icon.
ls output with colors (ls -G) is not the default option. Run the following command in your terminal to enable ls colors by default:
echo "alias ls='ls -G'" >> ~/.bashrc
source ~/.bashrc
This and all future terminal sessions will now display colors correctly.
If you're still not seeing colors on your remote (or local) session follow these steps:
In iTerm verify that you're sending a terminal type that supports colors. Open the preferences window -> Profiles -> Default -> Terminal. I'd recommend putting xterm-256color as the Terminal Type.
While connected to the remote machine, run ls -G and open the iTerm preferences again: preferences window -> profiles -> Default -> Colors. Adjust the ANSI Colors, and turn the minimum contrast down until the colors in the terminal window start to show color.
If the remote system supports ls --color=always, remove any existing aliases in ~/.profile or ~/.bashrc and update as follows:
echo "alias ls='ls --color=always'" >> ~/.bashrc
This command will escape spaces properly:
printf "%q\n" "$(pwd)" | pbcopy
You can alias it using something with history like cwd if you don't mind re-defining a different cwd
alias cwd='printf "%q\n" "$(pwd)" | pbcopy'
Ditch the pipe to pbcopy if you want it to work more like pwd and just print out the escaped path.
Or, to print the pwd while also copying it to the clipboard, use tee and an output process substitution:
alias cwd='printf "%q\n" "$(pwd)" | tee >(pbcopy)'

Nevermind, found it myself. I updated to version 3.1.beta.5, and the option was under Preferences - Appearance - Window - Show proxy icon in window title bar.
You have to install the shell integrations, or manually send the required ANSI sequences. The default macOS bashrc only sends the sequences to set the icon when it detects Terminal.app.
