Exe file not found with which after setting the Path

I need to have an exe file found in the terminal with "which FILE" command. I set the PATH to this file but I cannot find the file with which?

I added

export PATH=$PATH:/Users/neurolab/Desktop/Stephan/Programmes/MSM_old/msm_mac

in ~/.zprofile. msm_mac is the binary.

When I type in which msm or msm_mac, the result is msm not found.

Current value of the PATH:

The PATH is a list of directories so need to add

/Users/neurolab/Desktop/Stephan/Programmes/MSM_old

to your PATH (and re-read ~/.zprofile) to make it work.

Your question is unclear as it seems to ask several things. However the issue re launching from the Dock can be answered.

The Dock does not call a shell. .profile and other startup scripts are only run when Terminal.app or similar starts a shell or you run a shell script via launchd etc.

To change the path used for Apps launched from the Dock, Finder or other GUI then you need to change the path your Workspace uses this is in ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist e.g. mine is

.zshrc is a file run when you start an interactive zsh shell, found in your home directory. The error message says you have an export command which is written incorrectly on line 48. not valid in this context means you're trying to export something that's not a variable. It looks like you're trying to add stuff to your PATH, but are substituting the current path inside the zshrc file. Check that line in the file, there's probably a line along the lines of:

export $PATH=/some/directory/to/add/to/path/:$PATH

You just need to remove the first $ because it's substituting the current path there instead of assigning the PATH variable:

export PATH=/some/directory/to/add/to/path/:$PATH
