Can’t see Dropbox folder within localhost

I've setup Apache for web development on Yosemite. It's setup fine and I'm able to view folders within my documentroot using http://localhost as I'd expect to.

I now want to use my Projects folder within Dropbox using Apache so have moved my Dropbox folder within the documentroot. There are other directories within documentroot as well.

The problem is when using http://localhost to navigate around these directories, the Dropbox directory doesn't show in the browser. Nothing within it is accessible either. The directories sitting alonsgide are accessible as I'd expect. I think it's probably a permissions thing with the Dropbox directory.

I'm in the process of switching my dev environment from Windows (where this wouldn't have been a problem) to Mac so apologies if I'm missing anything. How do I make sure I can see and use this Dropbox directory when viewing its parent using http://localhost?

Open Info window (Command+I) and check Shared Folder.

You need to update you httpd-vhosts.conf to something like this:

<VirtualHost *:80>
    DocumentRoot "/Users/me/Sites/www.site1.dev"
    ServerName www.site1.dev
</VirtualHost>
<VirtualHost *:80>
    DocumentRoot "/Users/me/Sites/www.site2.dev"
    ServerName www.site2.dev
</VirtualHost>

Having each domain separately in your config allows you to have separate server options for each, e.g. Rewrite config, separate log files, etc.

Then, update your /etc/hosts and add this at the end:

127.0.0.1   www.site1.dev
127.0.0.1   www.site2.dev

This step is particurarily important as this is where your OS looks first when resolving domain names. Otherwise it will not know what www.site1.dev is.

Then simply restart the server by disabling Web Sharing and enabling it again.

To make sure your config works you can check apache logs (access_log and error_log) via Console.app (Files > /private/var/log > apache2).

Why not simply use git (and github or bitbucket)? I think that should work better for synchronizing/saving the dotfiles. See google and various blogposts for detailed instructions, or search github directly (1), (2).
