Ever since buying a new Mac, which has forced me to upgrade to Catalina, I cannot view the Trash folder in the Terminal. ls ~/.Trash just gives ls: .Trash: Operation not permitted. So does sudo ls ~/.Trash. According to ls -al ~, the permissions for ~/.Trash are drwx------, and the owner is me. sudo chmod a+x ~/.Trash and sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash both fail with the same error.
Is it possible to view the Trash in the terminal in Catalina?
You likely can not change the permissions of using the network shared drive, nfs, path. Instead use the approach below on the Mac involved, using the local paths.
You can grant yourself access to the daemon's files using the Finder's Get Info panel.
You may need to unlock the permissions settings using the Lock on the lower-right of the panel.
Alternatively, you can use the command line to change permissions, see Permissions for new files in shared directory. The command line approach is more capable and allows sudo to ensure you have permissions to make the change.

I recently had a file I could not delete from Trash. Finally I moved it from the trash back to the desktop, which I have synced to iCloud. Then I was apple to use the Files app on my iphone to delete it.
Another path to pursue: boot to recovery and turn off SIP (until you get the file deleted.)

You have to give the Terminal.app Full Disk permissions in the security settings.
