Cannot add permissions to a file share in File Sharing Preferences

I have a freshly built instance of OSX 10.9.4 running on a Late 2009 Mac Mini with two serially connected firewire Drobos.

I can add both of these external drives to the Shared Folders list of the "File Sharing" preferences list, but I can only add and modify the users and their permissions for one of the two shared drives.

The share that works fine

If I click the plus icon on the share that doesn't have any users or permissions, I can select a user, but nothing appears in the "Users" panel. Any other type of folder works except the second Drobo device.

Furthermore, the second drive appears to be sharing more or less in the default way, with an authenticated user having full read and write access and an unauthenticated user having read only access.

Does anyone know how I might go about troubleshooting this issue? It seems strange that it would occur on a fresh OSX build with only one application installed (VLC).

The hard drive I installed the fresh copy of OS X 10.9.4 completely died last week. I suspect that this hard drive failure was unrelated to the issues, but when I re-installed OS X again and went to add the share drives, everything worked as normal.

I suspect that this is an obscure bug, but if you come across this issue, a reinstall may fix it, as this worked for me.

If you set up their accounts in the Accounts pref pane on the server as "sharing only" then they will only get access to shared folders set up in the Sharing pane of System Preferences.

Since you say the email backup software requires that the user has real folders, then you can't remove them as "shares", they have full access to these folders and the server will advertise that.

Without knowing why the email software requires the user to have folders then a workaround is difficult to find.

The default permissions for newly created (/copied) items allow read and write access only to the owner (whoever created it), read-only access to everyone else. The best way around this is to create an access control entry on the folder, and set it to be inherited to items created in (/copied into) it. 'Course, the Finder doesn't give you access to the inheritance controls, so you have to go to the command line:

chmod +a "group:staff allow list,add_file,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity,writesecurity,chown,file_inherit,directory_inherit" ~/Public

Note that this gives read & write access to all accounts in the staff group (which basically means all user accounts); if you want a bit more control, create a group in System Preferences > Users & Groups, and add just yourself and your friend's account to it, then use "group:yourgroupname" in the above command. Also, the inheritance only applies to items as they're created, so it won't apply to files and folders already in your Public folder; if you want it to apply to existing items, add chmod's -R option (chmod -R +a ...)
