Automator PDF actions

When using the Automator PDF action "PDF to images" any annotations made to a PDF using preview are not converted as part of the output images. The base images are there but the annotations are not rendered.

Any solutions on this?

I've just tested this with the following workflow, selecting the Legal Notices.pdf from Photoshop CC as my sample, and it worked fine, keeping all annotations on the PDF.

One thing to note that may be causing the problem is that the PDF is not saved. When adding annotations to a PDF, don't forget to save the PDF before running the workflow. If Preview states that the PDF has been edited, don't forget to save.

PosteRazor is free, open source, and appears to do what you need. It takes a large image and splits it into a multi-page PDF.

As Nathan comments, the interface is pretty rough around the edges. Tiler and SplitPrint are paid alternatives if you prefer a little more flexibility and an interface that's easier on the eyes.

You'll want a tool that edits PDF files to append docments (or conversely, split them up). I use PDFPen for the job, but there are others that do less but might meet your needs.

Here is an article on using Hazel to script PDFPen as well as documentation on how PDFPen is scriptable in general. There is a Pro version of the app for a higher cost, so you might see if you need the extra features, but the normal version seems to meet your needs well enough.

Many helpful PDFPen example scripts can be found after you install the software in your user library:

Opening them in the AppleScript Editor is a great way to learn more.
