I am graphing a two-column data set that looks like this:
1/1/1963 3,209,827,882
1/1/1964 3,281,201,306
1/1/1965 3,350,425,793
But when I try to set the Value Labels in either a Line Chart or a Scatter Plot to "Date & Time" or "Duration" I find that they are greyed out.
Why would this be? In what situations is it possible to use these two options?
Without access to the spreadsheet that you've shown, I've attempted to recreate this myself. It appears that there are two things wrong with the spreadsheet above:
The test-array for the countif is of Data Format Automatic. This means that the zeros are not of format Duration and can't be compared by the countif.
To fix this, select the entire array and choose Duration from the Data Format list.
The countif's condition is of format Number whereas the test-array is of format Duration.
To fix this, use the following for the countif cell:
=COUNTIF(G2:G11,">0h 0m")
Took me a while, but I figured it out: The solution is to choose a scatter plot instead of a line chart.
Select Insert -> Chart -> 2D Scatter
Select the chart, then select Add Chart Data:
Now simply select your entire table, including the x axis. Numbers will figure out the rest and automatically select your leftmost column as the x-axis.
Finally, to make it look like a line chart, select the chart, then select the "Axis" tab in the inspector Chose Data Symbols: None and Connection Lines: Straight.
