When I move a message from one account to another (by dragging, or "Move to"), or to a local folder, I expect the message to be deleted on the original account. However, what Apple Mail does is archiving the original message. Is it possible to realize my desired behavior (e.g., via a rule or a script)?

Mail does have an action called "Archive" in the Message menu that moves the current message in to a directory called "Archive." I use it all day every day on my work IMAP account just like in Gmail. I stash everything in there and just rely on search to find what I need. It works great.
I don't think there's a way to remap the Delete key to perform an Archive action instead, but Archive does have a keyboard shortcut: control-command-A. If you find that as clunky as I do, you can remap it in System Preferences' Keyboard pane.
You can also add Archive to your toolbar if that's more your thing.
I had the same problem. Fixed it by turning off all sharing (the checkbox options on the right of the panel), THEN trying to delete again.

Archive is a misnomer on Apple Mail.
It is not Archived.
It is actually the Goggles "All Mail" folder.
If you do not want to see it in your Apple Mail disable it in Google Mail.
Google will keep all your emails in it.
