On a MacBook5,2 running OSX 10.5, with only 2GB RAM, Alfred toggles very slowly, like up to 5 seconds after the keystroke.
After I've just toggled it, it will toggle again much faster, but after a while it will be slow again.
What can I do to identify and fix the problem?
IIRC it does that even with the computer just started, so it's unlikely it's already swapping, but I'm open to suggestions.
Have you tried Reseting the SMU
The SMU (System Management Unit) is a microcontroller chip on the logic board that controls all power functions for your computer. If your computer is experiencing any issues regarding these functions, resetting the SMU may resolve the issue. The functions controlled by the SMU include:
It tells the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so on.
It handles system resets from various commands.
It controls the fan.
Note that resetting the SMU does not reset the PRAM.
Steps to reset the SMU on:
Power Mac G5 (Late 2005)
To reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) computer, either use the steps listed above for the Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) or:
Turn off the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
Open and remove both the metallic outer door and the inner plastic air deflector.
Remove the fan assembly immediately to the left of the processor module.
Press the SMU reset button on the logic board.
Replace the fan assembly, air deflector, and outer door.
Turn on the computer.
The SMU reset button is located underneath the lower bank of system memory slots, as shown below:
Unlike earlier models of Power Mac G5 or Power Mac G4 computers, the Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) and (Late 2005) models do not have a PMU. This functionality has been replaced by the SMU.
I use Harvest to track time. It has a robust API. There is a command-line tool called hcl for interacting with Harvest time sheets.
I haven't bought the Alfred Powerpack myself, but I presume that since the Powerpack includes an interface to develop your own shell scripts to extend Alfred that it would be fairly straightforward to start/stop new tasks:
$ hcl start mytaskalias adding a new feature
$ hcl stop
You've inspired me to look into this for improving my workflow. I currently use the Harvest application which has a very handy menu bar control, but being able to start/stop a timer quickly from Alfred sounds like a nice option…

I'd recommend turning off fade-in animation under Appearance where you'll see "Fade in Alfred window".
The only reasons Alfred would be slow are either RAM swapping and you're out of memory or, unlikely but possible, could be due to a network drive that is still being looked for after being disconnected.
