When I try to add a bookmark or a web page to the reading list in safari it freezes.
How do I solve this problem and what is causing it?

Select View > Hide Reading List, press ⇧⌘L, or press the button on the bookmark bar.
That is the only way in Safari.
Create the New folder first then add bookmarks to it.

Try to reinstall Safari.
Uninstall by...
/Applications/Safari.appto the trash.Download Safari from the apple website and reinstall it.
